361 Argyll Street
Andy and Madge Walker founded the business in 1980
A&M Walker (Contractors & Merchants) ltd, as it was known then was situated at Auchamore Farm, Dunoon. The business started as a builders merchant and building contractors providing joinerwork, plumbing, electrical, brickwork and fitted kitchens & bathrooms.
Andy and Madge’s love of gardening inspired them to create Dunoon’s first home & garden centre. The photo above was taken on the opening day of the new extension in 1986. These were in the days before B&Q or Homebase etc and the business grew steadily until 1991 when the need for a bigger premises with better access and parking was sought.
The former Montgomerys garage site at 361 Argyll Street was identified as the ideal location. The site was previously owned by the Montgomery family and as far back as the nineteen thirties they operated a Car Dealership, garage, and petrol station.
The site was struck by fire during the sixties, but it was rebuilt, and later leased to the US Navy to be used as a garage, petrol station, dental surgery, bank and supermarket.
In 1992, Walkers bought the site and transferred the existing business from Auchamore Farm.
Shortly after, a Coffee Shop was added, then a new Petrol Station with convenience store and more recently self storage facilities.
Today the business is run by Ian and Paul Walker along with their families.
Walkers are one of the largest, Independent, retail premises on Argyll Street and also one of the largest retail employers on Argyll Street.
We are very fortunate to have a loyal customer base from Dunoon, Innellan, Hunters Quay, Sandbank and further beyond.
Walkers have some exiting plans for expansion in the future so watch this space.
